Fat – Fatter - Liposuction?

Fat, fatter, German – we have all noticed it: three quarters of all men and more than half of the women in Germany weigh too much! Despite all diets, pills and fitness, it is hard for many people to get their body weight under control. Is liposuction the procedure of choice?

When Are You Overweight??

The so-called Body Mass Index (BMI) is accepted as the measure of being overweight. For men, a BMI of 24 is regarded as normal, for women it is 22. If it is above 30, doctors speak of obesity or adiposis. According to a study that was published in April by the International Association for the Study of Obesity (IASO), in Germany about 53 percent of the men have a BMI between 25 and 30 and for 22.5 percent the BMI is even above 30. Among the women, 35.6 percent are regarded as being overweight and 23.3 can be classified as obese. Germans thus hold first place among Europe's overweight population through the combination of overweight and adipose adults.  .

When Should Liposuction be Considered?

Today, obesity is seen as one of the greatest health risks in countries such as the United States. Worldwide, millions of people die because they are overweight or obese or because of the consequences for the organism. These include diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, as well as excessive strain on bones and joints. "Watching one's own weight is therefore the order of the day. If not for esthetic reasons, then at least for health reasons" is the recommendation of Dr. Werner Klebe of the Ostsee Institute for Esthetic Plastic Surgery in Flensburg. But many people find it difficult to practice self-discipline and to maintain a healthy diet in their everyday lives. A growing number of people therefore wish to have liposuction. "From a medical point of view, we take a critical view of this approach", explains Dr. Martin Sprengel, the specialist for plastic surgery at the Ostsee Institute. "Instead, the starring role for liposuction consists of permanently removing fat deposits that are hereditary or hormone-related and that stubbornly defy all efforts at practicing sports and keeping diets." And since it is not always easy to determine if a liposuction is the procedure of choice, our experts would be glad to consult with you in a personal meeting.

Calculate Your Body Mass Index (BMI)

Doctors determine if someone is overweight or obese based on the Body Mass Index (BMI). The BMI is calculated as the body weight in kilograms divided by the square of the body height in meters. The optimum value for women lies at a BMI of 22, and for men at a BMI of 24.
An example: A man who is 1.80 meters tall weighs 75 kilograms. His BMI is 75 : 1.802 = 23.15.
